Raised by his Ghanaian mother, Stormzy studied for an apprenticeship in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, and went onto working in an oil refinery in Southampton, Hampshire. Stormzy gained fame in the UK underground music industry after releasing the Wicked Skengman series of freestyles set to iconic grime beats. In July 2014, Stormzy self-released his debut EP Dreamers Disease. Subsequently, Stormzy won Best Grime Act at the MOBO Awards on October 22, 2014. Stormzy’s name began to reach the UK charts after a few more releases. Currently, Stormzy has won 31 awards and has been nominated for 62. He has collaborated with artists such as Dave, Khelani, Burna Boy and Ed Sheeran. With reference to political activism, Stormzy endorsed Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn and questioned the UK Government’s actions in response to the Grenfell Tower fire. Since its establishment in 2018, the ‘Stormzy Scholarship‘ has offered financial assistance to two UK black students every year, transforming their university experience. Stormzy has announced via his label that he aims to contribute £1 million each year for the next ten years to charities, organisations, and movements working to combat racial injustice, justice reform, and black empowerment in the UK. “Black people have been playing on an uneven field for far too long and this pledge is a continuation in the fight to finally try and even it.
