SUMMARY:International Day of Peace
DESCRIPTION:International Day of Peace\, also known as Peace Day\, is commemorated every year on September 21. It is a United Nations holiday for the end of war and violence\, and the promotion of world peace. It is also a day dedicated to those who promote peace in conflict zones by providing humanitarian aid. On the International Day of Peace\, UN countries declare a ceasefire for the day\, personally and politically. \n  \nBackground\nIn 1981 the United Kingdom and Costa Rica presented a joint resolution proposing a day for the commemoration and strengthening of the ideals of peace\, and the United Nations General Assembly declared this day to be International Day of Peace\, to be observed on the third Tuesday of September. In 2001\, Secretary-General Kofi Annan changed the date of commemoration to September 21. It was also on this year that the International Day of Peace was declared as a day of non-violence and international ceasefire. \nThe goal of the United Nations with this day is to promote better relationships between countries\, and international cooperation towards world peace and the end of war and conflicts. In working towards this goal\, on every International Day of Peace\, the countries that observe this day declare an official 24-hour ceasefire so that this day can be observed without any kind of conflict\, and world leaders put their differences aside to celebrate\, as an example to all citizens. \nTo mark the International Day of Peace\, the Peace Bell is rung at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City. The bell was a gift from Japan and is made with coins donated by children from most continents\, as a reminder of the human cost of war. The bell is inscribed with “Long live absolute world peace”. \nAs it is common with United Nations observances\, the International Day of Peace has a different theme every year. The theme for 2020 is “Shaping Peace Together”\, and focuses on the world coming together against the common threat that is COVID-19. \n  \nWhat to do on International Day of Peace\nThere are many International Day of Peace activities and events organized around the world every year. The UN provides a searchable map of events on their website so you can check if there are any near you. \nThese events can be public or private\, such as concerts\, dinners\, festivals\, or prayers\, but all of them have the intention of promoting peace between everyone. \nSince 1984\, through the initiative of the NGO Pathways to Peace\, countries around the world observe a Minute of Silence\, at noon of each time zone.

SUMMARY:Commonwealth Games 2022
DESCRIPTION:  \nTaking place from 28 July to 8 August\, Birmingham 2022 is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to showcase the West Midlands on a global stage. \n\n\n\n\nThe Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games will have a significant\, positive\, outcome for the city\, its people\, and its local communities. It will play a crucial part in the recharge and recovery of the region: from the kickstart it will provide to the economy\, to the renewed sense of progressive pride it will instil in citizens. \nWe believe that all organisations should put purpose at the core of their existence\, and we are committed to converting this belief into tangible actions and outcomes. This document is our blueprint that outlines how the Games can help play its part to achieve a better and more sustainable future. \nThis strategy sets out our sustainability goals and the ways we seek to address and overcome the challenges that the physical and social environment face. \nWe are a dynamic organisation and as we evolve and travel through the lifetime of Games delivery\, so too will this plan. What remains resolute is that we are steadfast in this journey. It is far more than a policy; it is an underpinning tenet of how we operate and how we will exist as an organisation.

SUMMARY:National Children's Day
DESCRIPTION:National Children’s Day in the United States is celebrated on the second Sunday in June. This day highlights how important children are in society\, and that some still face a lot of problems and difficulties in different aspects of their lives. The goal is to invest in children’s future\, improve their welfare\, and make the world a better place for them. If you have children\, this is a good day to take some time off to play with them\, talk to them\, and figure out what is going on in their lives\, always remembering to be a good role model for them. \nA similar holiday to National Children’s Day is Universal Children’s Day\, also known as World Children’s Day\, commemorated every year on November 20. \n  \nHistory of National Children’s Day\nThroughout the years\, National Children’s Day has been observed on many different dates in the United States. Originally\, it was created by Reverend Dr. Charles Leonard from Chelsea\, Massachusetts\, in 1856. Children’s Day was celebrated on the second Sunday in June\, and was a special day in which to baptize children\, where the service addressed some of the special needs and problems that concern children. \nEventually\, in 1989\, the Bush and Clinton administration officially proclaimed National Children’s Day to be observed on the second Sunday of October. This was the official date for the holiday\, until 2001\, when the Republican government changed it to the first Sunday of June. The Obama Administration chose to change the date yet again to November 20\, to coincide with the UN’s World Children’s Day. \nBecause of all these changes in dates\, people can choose when they want to celebrate National Children’s Day. Some go with the original second Sunday in June\, others prefer to observe it in November. However\, nothing is stopping you from celebrating it on all those dates. We’re sure the children in your life will thank you.

SUMMARY:World Bicycle Day
DESCRIPTION:World Bicycle Day\, also known as International Bicycle Day\, is celebrated across the globe on June 3rd. This holiday is sponsored by the United Nations\, to promote physical activity\, to encourage people to use a bicycle to move around as it is a more environmentally friendly option\, and to highlight the need for better and safer infrastructures to cycle on\, in bigger cities. \n  \nHistory of World Bicycle Day\nThe United Nations General Assembly declared June 3rd as World Bicycle Day in 2018\, after a campaign by Professor Leszek Sibilski\, who worked for the UN as a social scientist. Sibilski gathered the support of the students in his sociology class\, and of 56 member countries of the UN to promote a UN Resolution that would establish an international day in celebration of the bicycle\, its history\, versatility\, and sustainability. \n  \nWhy we celebrate World Bicycle Day\nThis is a holiday that can be enjoyed by anyone\, regardless of age\, gender\, or nationality. Because of this\, the UN wants World Bicycle Day to highlight the fact that the bicycle should be seen as a symbol of mutual understanding which promotes a culture of peace. \nThe bicycle has a rich history and great cultural significance. It stands as one of the most important human inventions\, as it provides people with a means of transport that is affordable and practical\, while helping them stay healthy. Many people across the world rely on their bicycles to go about their daily lives\, and access education and health care. \nNot just that\, the bicycle is one of the most sustainable and environmentally friendly means of transportation. By encouraging people to cycle\, World Bicycle Day highlights to local and national governments how important it is to have infrastructures in place that make cycling safe. In the long run\, this will have a great positive impact on the planet. \nFinally\, staying active and cycling regularly is a great way to stay healthy and fit. Cycling helps reduce the risk of stroke\, heart disease\, and certain cancers. In recent years\, World Bicycle Day has been associated with the prevention of diabetes\, and the promotion of a healthy lifestyle for those who suffer from it. \nCurrently\, only around 12% of Americans cycle regularly. By promoting awareness of this day\, maybe the other 88% will come around to it too! \n  \nHow to celebrate World Bicycle Day\nDitch your car or public transportation for the day\, and get on a bicycle. You might discover new areas of your city\, make some friends\, and enjoy the good Summer weather. Encourage friends and family to join you\, you might all become regular cyclists! \nWhile you’re riding a bike today you can participate in World Bicycle Relief’s campaign #CyclingActsofKindness. The idea is to do something nice while riding a bicycle\, this could be visiting an elderly relative\, dropping off some food for a friend\, or offer to pick up a neighbor’s groceries.

SUMMARY:Global Running Day
DESCRIPTION:Global Running Day is an international observance\, celebrated every year on the first Wednesday in June. This day commemorates the sport of running and encourages people to get up and go for a run – no matter the distance – to inspire them to start leading a more active lifestyle. Everyone is invited to join in\, and anyone can do it. It is free\, and all you need is running shoes\, some water\, and to submit your name on the Global Running Day website so that your pledge is accounted for. \nWhether you’re a seasoned runner or a beginner who is just taking their first steps\, you are welcome to join in on one of the many running events happening on this day across the country. As an alternative\, you can also just go out for a solo jog. \nEven children are invited to participate. The Million Kid Run is the youth division of Global Running Day\, and aims to get young people excited about exercise and teach them that being active is fun. \n  \nHistory of Global Running Day\nThis day was originally known as National Running Day\, and was created in the United States. The first event happened in 2009 and was a success. This inspired organizers to take it to an international level\, and create Global Running Day\, in 2016. \nGlobal Running Day was first celebrated on June 1\, 2016\, with 2.5 million people from 177 countries pledging to run 9.2 million miles. People who take part on this day are asked to share what inspires them to run\, with many answers relating to staying healthy and fit\, enjoying nature\, or training for a marathon. \n  \nThe Benefits of Running\nRunning for even just 5 minutes a day could help keep you healthy! Many studies show that there are infinite benefits to running\, and you don’t even need to do it every day or for a long time or distance. \nPeople who run tend to live longer than those who don’t\, and even going for a run once a week can add 3 years to your life. To add to this\, the years you do live are much healthier and productive because you’re staying active. \nRunning also helps reduce stress\, improves mental health\, and helps you sleep better\, which you will notice will have an impact on all aspects of your life. Physically\, it improves bone strength\, lowers the risk of diabetes\, reduces blood pressure\, and can even prevent some cancers. \nIt is also a fun exercise! If you run outside you get to be in nature or get to know the area where you live in better\, and while some prefer to jog alone\, there are many running groups who get together to run where you can meet new people and make lifelong friendships.

SUMMARY:Memorial Day
DESCRIPTION:Memorial Day is observed in America on the last Monday of May\, and it is a day to commemorate and remember the men and women who lost their lives while in service for the US military. It is a federal holiday\, and as such\, businesses and schools are closed\, and most people have the day off work. \nOriginally named Decoration Day\, it was officially made into a federal holiday in 1971. Traditionally\, people will visit cemeteries and memorials for American soldiers\, and there are several parades around the country. It also unofficially marks the beginning of the summer season. \n  \nThe origins of Memorial Day\nIt is unclear where Memorial Day was first observed\, but the day was created right after the end of the Civil War\, in 1865. At the time\, the American Civil War was the event that took more lives in U.S. history\, it is estimated that around 620\,000 soldiers died during it. As such\, in the late 1860s\, people began organizing tributes to the lost soldiers\, by decorating their graves and paying their respects. \nWhile it is unknown where Memorial Day started\, several independent communities and states likely put up their own memorials. However\, records show that the earliest commemoration of the fallen soldiers was held by recently freed slaves. \nOfficially\, Waterloo\, New York is known as “The Birthplace of Memorial Day” as it was there that the first annual\, wide event was held on May 5th in 1966.
